Dear HCPS Families, Faculty, and Staff:

This afternoon, Governor Northam announced his decision to close all public schools in Virginia for the remainder of the school year due to the ongoing COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) public health crisis.  As a result, Hanover County Public Schools will remain closed through the end of this academic school year.

We understand that this news is concerning, but we also recognize that these extraordinary measures are necessary to protect everyone’s health and safety.  As we move forward, we will continue to do everything possible to help address the concerns and questions that you have about your child’s ongoing education during this unprecedented time in our nation’s history.  I want to assure you that we are continuing to work daily with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) on a wide variety of issues, from grades and graduation to continued student learning and meal availability.  The VDOE has assured us that they will provide statewide guidance regarding these and other matters in the coming days, and we will share this information with you as quickly as possible.

In the coming days, weeks, and months, we ask for your continued patience, kindness, and understanding as we navigate this new territory together.  Our team is actively working at all levels to further develop and operationalize more robust, individualized academic resources and other plans to address the immediate and future needs of our students, families, and staff.  As we make these final decisions, we promise to share specific details with you through our various communication channels to keep you fully informed.

Without question, we are living through difficult times that will challenge us in many ways.  However, I firmly believe that we are a reflection of the community we serve, and our community is and will remain strong.  I cannot thank you enough for the outpouring of compassion, encouragement, and support that you have shown towards our team over the past couple of weeks as we have worked at all levels to support our students, families, and staff.  We are truly grateful.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Gill
Superintendent
