Secondary Summer School

students in classroomThe Hanover County Public Schools Summer School program provides students the opportunity to take repeat courses to meet deficiencies, earn credits needed for graduation or promotion, enroll in required courses for advancement, and enroll in elective courses for enrichment.

The general guidelines for summer school are as follows:

  • Credit for repeated work will be granted on the same basis as that for new work. However, a student may receive a unit credit for a course only once.

  • Courses shall be structured to require completion of all course requirements normally taught over a minimum of 140 clock hours of classroom instruction per unit of credit.

Hanover online learning is available to resident students during the 2020 summer session in the form of fully online and blended learning classes as defined below:

  • Fully Online courses = Instruction is delivered solely online.
  • Blended Learning courses = Instruction is delivered both online and by face-to-face class sessions.

Students should discuss online learning with their school counselor and parents to ensure that their personality and work habits translate to success in the online learning environment. Successful online learning students are self-directed and independent learners, actively participate in all online activities, effectively manage their time to meet class deadlines, have strong reading comprehension skills, and are proficient with the use of technology.

The Patrick Henry High School Library Media Center will be open and staffed by a certified librarian during summer school hours. The cafeteria will not be open during the summer. Students may bring snacks or purchase them at school during designated breaks. Students staying at Patrick Henry High School for both morning and afternoon sessions should plan to bring lunch from home.
