Dear Families,
We hope you are well. We are writing to inform you of important information regarding the 2024-25 school calendar and inclement weather days.
As we shared with you earlier this month, the school calendar includes banked instructional time (meaning a makeup day is not required) should inclement weather lead to the closure of school. The adopted 2024-25 school calendar included two banked days and three designated makeup days. The January 6-10 closures constituted both the banked days and the makeup days (January 13, February 17, and March 21).
Our work in crafting the makeup schedule is guided by the Code of Virginia, which outlines school year requirements for Virginia school divisions.
Please note the following as it relates to these requirements:
- Our school calendar is required to offer at least 990 instructional hours. The adopted calendar exceeds this requirement.
- The Code of Virginia stipulates that school divisions make up the first five days missed. In our case, the two banked days and the three previously announced makeup days fulfill this requirement.
- For missed days following those first five, one day must be made up for each two days missed. No adjustments to our calendar are needed based upon the closure on Wednesday, January 22. Should there be another inclement weather day (the seventh total this school year), Tuesday, May 27 and Wednesday, May 28, which were previously designated as early release days during the final week of school, would be full school days across the school division.
- The next sequence would involve a remote learning day (more on this below).
In short, here is an overview of our inclement weather closures and associated makeup time:
- Inclement Weather Day 1 (January 6): Banked Time
- Inclement Weather Day 2 (January 7): Banked Time
- Inclement Weather Day 3 (January 8): Makeup Day on January 13
- Inclement Weather Day 4 (January 9): Makeup Day on February 17
- Inclement Weather Day 5 (January 10): Makeup Day on March 21
- Inclement Weather Day 6 (January 22): No Adjustments
- Inclement Weather Day 7: May 27 and May 28 Become Full Instructional Days
- Inclement Weather Day 8: No Adjustments
- Inclement Weather Day 9: Remote Learning Day
- Inclement Weather Day 10: No Adjustments
- Inclement Weather Day 11: Remote Learning Day
- Inclement Weather Day 12: No Adjustments
- Inclement Weather Day 13: Remote Learning Day
Remote Learning Day and Plan
Our team has worked diligently this month to develop a remote learning plan that will provide students with the opportunity to continue their education from home, ensuring instructional time is not lost due to extended weather-related disruptions. This would avoid extended school days, the loss of Spring Break, or Saturday makeup sessions.
While we will, of course, share additional information regarding remote learning day plans should it become necessary, we want to provide you with a brief overview of what it would look like:
- Recognizing the fluidity of the situation, flexibility will be key. We would urge our families, staff, and community to practice the same patience, grace, and kindness that helped us successfully navigate recent school years. Simply put, if remote learning days end up being necessary, we would need your adaptability to help ensure that our students receive instruction and support, recognizing the impact that this may bring to your family.
- Secondary students, following the A/B schedule, would access lessons in Schoology using their Chromebooks, while elementary students would complete activities that are shared with families via ParentSquare.
- We recognize that some students may not have Wi-Fi access. Please know that in the spirit of flexibility, due dates for assignments would be flexible to accommodate students without Wi-Fi access and ensure they can complete their assignments.
Again, should a remote learning day be necessary (we are two inclement weather days away from that being the case), we will share more information to help you, our students, and our staff prepare.
We recognize that this is complex. We appreciate your flexibility, support, and trust.
Thank you.
